Mastectomy
Mastectomy is necessary in about 30% of breast cancers. The operation consists of removing the entire mammary gland and possibly the nipple plate.
A breast reconstruction can be performed, if the patient wishes, during the same operation (immediate reconstruction) or later after the treatments (delayed/secondary reconstruction).

All about mastectomy
The indication for mastectomy is not related to the severity of the cancer, but to its size relative to the volume of the breast. Some aggressive but small cancers can be treated conservatively, while others that are not very aggressive but diffuse require mastectomy.
Most often, the incision is oblique so that the scar is not visible in the cleavage.
What is a skin-sparing mastectomy?
This technique consists in keeping all the skin of the breast, except the areola and the nipple.
What is a nipple-sparing mastectomy?
All the skin of the breast is preserved, including the areola and the nipple. This technique is used especially in cases of immediate reconstruction. It is not always possible and depends on the characteristics of your cancer.
